Tax - migrants or visitors - tax file number application

Service Description

If you are a temporary visitor or permanent migrant, you can apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) online. A TFN is a unique number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). You do not have to have a TFN, but without one you may pay more tax than necessary or be unable to get government benefits you are entitled to receive.

Only one TFN is issued to you for your lifetime. It is therefore essential that you keep it secure.

If you already have a TFN but do not know what it is, go through this application process and indicate when asked that you already have a TFN. A notice with your TFN will be forwarded to you.

If you know your TFN but wish to advise the Tax Office of changes to your details, go through this application process and enter your updated details.

Use the Click to access button below to commence your application for a TFN.

Who can use this service?

You can apply for a TFN online only if you are currently in Australia and you have a visa that allows work rights, a visa that allows permanent migration, or a valid visa to stay in Australia indefinitely.
